Equipment

  • 1 waffle maker
  • 1 hand whisk

Ingredients

Dry Mixture

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp matcha powder
  • tsp salt

Wet Mixture

  • ½ cup whole milk
  • cup vegetable oil
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg

Toppings

  • Fresh berries
  • Honey or powdered sugar, your favorite jam

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, mix and sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, matcha powder, and salt. This step ensures that your waffle batter is smooth and free of lumps, allowing the matcha flavor to distribute evenly in the waffles.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and egg until well combined.
  • Pour the wet mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients and whisk until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can result in tough waffles. A few lumps in the batter are perfectly fine!
  • Preheat your waffle maker. Once heated, lightly grease the waffle plates with cooking spray or oil to prevent sticking.
  • Pour the batter onto the preheated waffle maker, spreading it evenly to the edges. Close the lid and cook until golden brown and crispy, typically about 2-5 minutes, depending on your waffle maker.
  • Carefully remove the waffles from the maker and transfer them to a plate. Top with a generous handful of fresh berries and drizzle with honey, powdered sugar, or your favorite jam.

Notes

  1. To keep the waffles from going stale: once they're cooked, place them in a preheated oven at around 200°F (93°C) while you finish cooking the rest of the batch. This helps maintain their crispness until you're ready to serve.
  2. If you don’t have time, you can also make a big batch and freeze them. Don’t worry, they still taste as good.
