Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 8 oz thinly sliced beef
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Onion sliced
  • Ginger sliced
  • Garlic minced
  • Steamed rice
  • 1/8 cup Water

Sauce

  • 1 tbsp mirin sweet sake
  • 1 tbsp regular soy sauce
  • ¼ tbsp dark soy sauce

Garnishing

  • Egg yolk
  • Sesame seeds
  • Green onions
  • Japanese beni shoga/ginger pickle

Instructions

  • Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, marinate the beef with mirin, sake, regular soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and cornstarch. Allow the beef to marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  • Heat a tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and minced garlic, and sauté until they turn golden brown and fragrant.
  • Once the onions and garlic are caramelized, add the marinated beef to the skillet. Spread it out evenly to ensure each slice cooks evenly.
  • Add water and allow the beef to cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Build Your Bowl: cook your steamed rice. Once the rice is ready, spoon it into individual serving bowls. Top each bowl with a generous portion of the beef.
  • Garnish your Gyudon bowls with an egg yolk, a sprinkle of sesame seeds, thinly sliced green onions, and Japanese pickled ginger. These vibrant garnishes not only add visual appeal but also enhance the dish’s flavor profile.
